What is LED lighting?
LED (Light Emitting Diode) circuits have been around for many years. They have seen a variety of uses. Most recently, they have pretty much taken over big screen television and computer monitor duties. But these LEDs are relatively small and do not have a large output of light.
Over the past few years, more powerful LEDs have been developed for a variety of uses: Flash lights, Police Car Light Bars, key fobs, Christmas lights, emergency LED lights, and step lights, to name just a few. They are small and use only a fraction of the energy of incandescent and HID fixtures to produce a similar amount of light. The main hold-back has been their cost, but that is changing as LED lighting is becoming exceptionally affordable.
LED ‘right’ for me?
LED lighting is now getting very competitive with other similar light sources. For example, LED flood light fixtures using 96 Watts of energy can put out a similar amount of light of a 250 Watt Metal Halide light fixture. However, energy savings is only part of the story. The other part is the longevity of the typical LED fixture, normally 35,000 to 50,000 hours. For a homeowner, longevity may not be important. To the commercial property manager, the labour savings in LED versus other technologies can bring the overall energy+maintenance savings down to where a 2-3 year payback on investment is achieved. This is also the reason why industrial LED lighting is so popular. Large industrial spaces, such as factories, need a lot of light to be properly lit. And LED lighting offers an affordable and effective solution!
However, even residential customers appreciate the energy savings over time. Not to mention using LED bulbs in light fixtures that are difficult to get to (ever see the recessed can light installed in a three-story entryway where the only way to get to it would be by scaffold or mechanical lift?) enhances safety by reducing or eliminating frequent trips up ladders to change bulbs.
Is LED Lighting Attractive?
We all know how important it is to have attractive lighting in our homes and commercial spaces, but it is safe to say that LED lighting is also very pleasing to the eye. Gone are the days of that bluish-green colour that pleased no one. Today’s LED lamps and fixtures can look like a crisp white halogen, a warm white incandescent, or many colours in between. There are a wide variety of choices when it comes to LED light fixtures and tones so that there is an ideal LED lighting installation solution for everyone.
